Loneliness Awareness Week: Random Acts of Connection
Loneliness Awareness Week raises awareness of loneliness and empowers everyone to make connections across the UK and worldwide. This year’s theme, Random Acts of Connection, encourages everyone to increase those simple, everyday moments of connection which help us feel happier and less lonely.
Community Senior Letters is proud to support the Marmalade Trust’s Loneliness Awareness Week, taking place this year from the 10th – 16th June. Our mission is to alleviate loneliness and bridge the intergenerational gap through letter writing. As primary school students write heartfelt letters to elderly care home residents, meaningful connections are made between people from all backgrounds, contexts and walks of life.
Fostering Connection Through Letters
In line with this year’s theme ‘Random Acts of Connection’, we believe that each letter sent from young students to elderly care home residents is a powerful act of connection. These letters do more than just bring joy; they remind our seniors that they are remembered, valued, and loved by their community. For many elderly residents, receiving a letter from a child can be a highlight of their day, sparking conversations, and bringing back fond memories of their own youth. For younger students, this letter writing initiative is a simple yet effective way to cultivate empathy, kindness and understanding, while teaching them the importance of reaching out and making a positive impact on the lives of others.
The art of letter writing is deeply personal, and one that fosters connection in a more meaningful way than modern communication. It demonstrates a level of effort, thoughtfulness and reflection which is often lacking in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world. Community Senior Letters aims to bring back this lost art of letter writing, highlighting how even small acts of kindness have the power to make a significant difference to people’s lives.
Get Involved: Write, Connect, Inspire
As we celebrate Loneliness Awareness Week, we encourage schools and care homes to continue writing to each other, and invite new schools and care homes to get involved in this letter exchange. By participating in Random Acts of Connection, we can all contribute to a more connected and compassionate society. Join Community Senior Letters in spreading love, kindness, and the joy of human connection, one letter at a time!
